2016 Tacoma Film Festival Program

Page 1

WELCOME! Welcome to the 11th Annual Tacoma Film Festival! This is my fourth year directing TFF and it inspires me to see that not only have filmmakers become PHOTO BY LAVENDAR BOUQUET more committed to TFF, so has our community. Local businesses sponsor events and films, volunteers take care of thousands of daily details and host visiting filmmakers in their homes, and more and more of our friends and neighbors have jumped in to the totally unique, creative, and enthusiastic experience of discovery that a film festival is. At TFF you will find new films of all kinds: live-action, documentary, animated, virtual reality, shorts and features from the Pacific Northwest and around the globe. Many of our films are premieres and you will be the first in the world to see it. Many go on to festivals like Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW. TFF’s eight days represent an entire year’s worth of work from our volunteers and staff who watch over 1,200 films submitted from Korea to Albania to Sri Lanka to Columbia to our own backyard. Yes, it can be a challenge to map out your trip to TFF in order to see absolutely everything you can, but I challenge you to trust us. Don’t know where to start? Flip through the program with your eyes closed and point, pick something. Anything. You may see a new perspective, a new idea, or new inspiration that you never considered before - and you’ll have that mind blowing experience along with hundreds of film supporters and filmmakers. See you at the movies!

Brian was a member of the Grammy nominated band, Dirty Projectors (2006-2012), and has performed or recorded with an array of artists throughout the world including Alarm Will Sound, Björk, David Byrne, Doudou N’Diaye Rose, Juana Molina, Mira Calix, The Roots and St. Vincent.

SATURDAY OCT 8

SECRET SCREENINGS: WHAT ARE SECRET SCREENINGS? These are films that have not yet premiered in the United States. Some have screened internationally at top festivals, but the filmmakers need to preserve the ‘premiere’ status for possible inclusion in top U.S. film festivals. These festivals often require a film never to have played before, so keeping secrecy in Tacoma allows them to both screen here (secretly!) and preserve formal debut status elsewhere. This is a unique opportunity for Grand Cinema patrons to see films before anyone else.
