I Want More, I Want Less

I Want More, I Want Less
Drama | 2018 | NR. 1hr 27min
DIRECTOR: Bryce Richardson 2018 Tacoma Film Festival Official Selection

An accountant in Queens rents out the front of her store to a young man who repairs cell phones... and sometimes pickpockets them. She tries to mentor him, but their friendship is tested by his opportunistic outlook in this unforgiving, damaged country.

"To make ends meet, an accountant (Gabby Girma) in Queens rents out the front of her store to a young man (Sam Abbas) who not only repairs cell phones but, unbeknownst to her, also steals them. A juicy premise such as this all but begs for the kind of filmmaker interested in exploiting it for maximum drama. Writer/director Bryce Richardson, praise him, is not that kind of filmmaker. Instead, he opts for a delicate, slightly distanced perspective. The superlative, human-scale performances of Girma and Abbas give away no extraneous emotions to the audience. Richardson and cinematographer Rafael Abreu-Canedo frame the characters in medium and wide shots, making them inseparable from the world they must survive in. And Christopher Day’s subtle electronic score is used sparingly for atmosphere, not for dictating emotions. The maturity and skill of Richardson’s omniscient view transcends simplistic notions of identification characters and scapegoats in movies, and raises real-world questions about the dictates of modern capitalism." - Andy Stark
