Indigenous women have held leadership roles in storytelling since time immemorial. These films herald new voices to the diversifying dialogue on Indigenous issues. Curated by juror Tracy Rector, presented by Seattle International Film Festival.

1. Abnormal Freedom

An homage to a young woman’s Cree-Ojibway relations; a visual exploration of memories with her family; and a metaphorical collage of the challenges she continues to face.

2. Birds in the Earth
FINLAND | 11 MIN | Marja Helander
Two young Sámi ballet students, Birit and Katja Haarla, examine the deeper questions of the ownership of Sámi land through dance.

3. Geoduck
US | 7 MIN | Tracy Rector
Indigenous fisherwoman, Lydia Sigo, reveals the challenges of harvesting geoduck and her efforts in conservation.

4. I Like Girls

Four women reveal the nittygritty about their first loves, sharing funny and intimate tales of one-sided infatuation, mutual attraction, erotic moments, and fumbling attempts at sexual expression. For them, discovering that they’re attracted to women comes hand in hand with a deeper understanding of their identity and a joyful self awareness.

CANADA | 13 MIN | Michelle Latimer
North Dakota’s recent oil boom has caused the state’s population to double, as workers flock to the region. With this dramatic increase has come an influx of drugs, crime, and sexual violence. On the Fort Berthold Indian reservation in central North Dakota, rates of sexual violence and harassment have increased 168% with Indigenous women most impacted.

8. Three Thousand

In this short film, Inuk artist Asinnajaq plunges us into a sublime imaginary universe. Embedding historic footage into original animation, she conjures up a vision of hope and beautiful possibility.
