TFF is proud to present a focus on Hal Ashby, screening Harold and Maude, Being There, and the career-spanning documentary Hal. Ashby (1929-1988) is one of the most influential directors of the 1970s wave of “New Hollywood” filmmakers who were making modestly budgeted, socially- realist films. Ashby’s work has had a profound impact on cinema and influenced generations of filmmakers.
His films blend cutting humor, insightful and poignant writing, and a true love for the complexity
of the human spirit. In addition to Harold and Maude (1971) and Being There (1979), Ashby was best known for The Last Detail (1973), Shampoo (1975) and Coming Home (1978).
We celebrate Ashby’s work with Nick Dawson, journalist and author of BEING HAL ASHBY:
LIFE OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL. Dawson will share insight into the life of the director and the making of his films.
